Pharmacogenomics Testing

Pharmacogenomics testing (PGx) aims to analyze an individual’s genes to predict the body’s response to various medications, including those that may cause allergic reactions and determining appropriate dosages to avoid adverse effects. This is done according to pharmacogenetics guidelines and covers a wide range of essential drug categories, with over 60 medications, such as painkillers, antiplatelet drugs, cough suppressants, anticonvulsants, gout medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and HIV antivirals. This helps the patient understand which medications are suitable for them and can be used without side effects, allowing physicians to adjust the dosage accordingly.

For severe drug reactions presenting with skin conditions, such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), and maculopapular exanthema (MPE), which manifest as skin and mucous membrane symptoms, patients may experience fever, mouth ulcers, eye inflammation, rashes, itching, and other symptoms. TEN is a more
severe condition, potentially increasing the mortality rate by up to 30%.

Who should get tested?

• Patients with prior allergic reactions to specific medications,
• Patients who have not responded well to certain drugs in the past,
• Regular medication users
• Individuals using multiple medications concurrently
• Who seek to understand their personal responses to different drug types.
